Third Party Marketplace News – Martha goes to Amazon, eBay offsite sales? and eBay locks out sellers

Every week, Hendrik Laubscher will be providing third party sellers with a selection of news stories that they need to be aware of. As a Prosper Show participant we strive to ensure that you can focus on your business while we handle all the industry news.

This past week has focused on Amazon gaining Martha Stewart’s American Made from eBay. It might be PR or a very clever move to get some more visitors to the Handmade marketplace which is still in its infancy. eBay on the other hand is dealing with seller unhappiness over issues with the Sellerhub and has potentially opened the door to off site sales.

Martha Stewart has ditched eBay, taking her American Made store to Amazon’s Handmade marketplace, as the e-commerce giant flexes its muscle in the burgeoning online market for handcrafted goods. But both eBay and Ms. Stewart confirmed on Tuesday that they had decided to part ways. eBay was seen as the marketplace initially but this move signifies to me that Amazon is becoming the marketplace where brands interact with their customers. The policy against offering to buy or sell outside of eBay is spelled out on this page: “We don’t allow our members to use eBay to contact each other to make offers to buy or sell items outside of eBay. Also, members can’t use information obtained from eBay to contact each other about buying or selling outside of eBay.” Is eBay relaxing their policy on email addresses in seller-customer conversations? It is imperative that sellers honor the regulations and rules on the  platform on which they sell their items. I think this is an isolated incident. Read more here.

“It seems some sellers are locked out of eBay’s new Seller Hub, and some of those sellers say they are unable to process orders. The problem began a day or two ago.” This is not the time of the year (we are in the middle of the festive season) to be locking sellers out of accounts on any platform, let alone a platform that is supposedly trying to rekindle favor with sellers.
